Leatherman Skeletool - A Reduced Down, Lightweight Product Supplied With The Most Popular Tools Designed By Leatherman

I have owned a couple of multi tools over the years, however as yet not had that much use for them. I carried one for fixing saddles and horse gear when on the go for a while but wasn't too pleased with them.

For the most part they are a group of unsubstantial mini tools with far too many ornaments and toys fitted to be very useful for anything except the most simple of tasks.

When the better quality tools were introduced they were sizeable and bulky again, still with too much junk attached. For a moment it seemed that the multi tool manufacturer's aimed to make the biggest oversized, bulkiest pocket tool going. It was like the cell phone challenge with so many trying to pack the most stuff as possible into a multi tool. It seemed pretty odd for a period of time.

For canoe trips I always packed a little tool kit with what I figured I would use instead of a weighty tool. It tipped the scales at a bit more than a pound but inevitably it would be used at least once on a longer trip. The kit usually consisted of a small stubby screwdriver, a set of pliers, some replacement screws, and some wire. I recently found a multi tool that makes absolute sense to bring with me though.

Funnily enough, they have been for sale for a while but I didn't consider them. Some time ago, I needed to install a shower head but was not equipped with tools. I ended up doing it with just a can opener and a pair of scissors. I decided this would be a perfect starting point for carrying my multi tool again. I sorted through the junk drawer and found it after a while, I then remembered why it ended up there initially. Because it was junk.

Enter the Skeletool by Leatherman Tool group:

At only 5 ounces it could live in my pocket unnoticed most of the time and it mean that I no longer needed two items from my tool kit. The brilliant point is that for the world of camping where you might need to repair a gas stove, a metal buckle on a pack, the zipper on a shelter, or tighten up a broken canoe seat; the Skeletool is everything you need without any of the fluff.

First off the pliers are usually similar for multi tools. They have built in wire cutters and they cut through coat hangers pretty well so will tackle the brass wire I carry.

Next the blade, easy open with one hand using a thumb hole. The blade was so sharp it could cut the corner off a sheet of paper with no problems.

The screwdriver attachment comes with a couple of phillips and two slotted bits. The bits are Leatherman proprietary as opposed to industry standard, despite this they do lock into the unit with a spring clip. The extra one is tucked away in the handle and is a friction fit.

Finally, its well designed and put together by my standards - I am pretty fussy with stuff like this. I purchased my Leatherman Skeletool at Leatherman Store and they also sell the Leatherman Skeletool CX.
