An Overview Of Forging Operation Of Steel

The importance of steel in our lives is indisputable. It is so crucial that steel is everywhere. It is in our homes, workplaces, vehicles, parks and everywhere that you could think of. However, the steel that we observe in our daily lives is not in its original form but actually has undergone treatment process to improve its characteristics.

Forging is one of the first steel treatment options discovered by mankind. The forging procedure would usually involve a blacksmith with a hammer and anvil. The blacksmith also utilizes water for cooling down the heated work piece. Rolling mills is a metal forming process in which metal supply is passed through a pair of rolls. Rolling is classified based on the temperature of the metal rolled. If the temperature of the metal is higher than its recrystallization temperature, then the process is referred to as hot rolling.

However, the forging process these days has undergone modernization. It no longer requires a blacksmith manually laboring away with a hammer and anvil to create the desired shape. This tiresome procedure is now replaced by either employing presses or hydraulic or hammers powered by compressed air. Despite this, there are also hammers driven by steam and electrical energy as well. Regardless of the modernization of the forging basic principal of the forging process remains the same.

The forging process requires a compressive stress to be put on the work piece. This is needed to refine the grain structure of the work piece so that they are orientated to the direction of principle stresses which the work piece will experience during actual use. By doing this, the work piece will have much better strength, ductility and toughness.

The forging process starts with a standard billet to be reformed. Previously, the forging process can only be carried out for simple forms such as swords and blades. The reason for this is that it was difficult to make complex shapes correctly. These days, because of the developments in modern forging methods, the forging process is not just limited to uncomplicated shapes any longer. Complex shapes can now be forged correctly utilizing modern presses.

There are two categories of the forging process. This is the hot forging and cold forging. The grain portion of the forged part and also its properties is affected by the temperatures at which the forging process is performed. Hot Forging is when the forging procedure is carried out at a temperature higher than its re-crystallization temperature. However, it is called cold forging if it is carried out below its re-crystallization temperature.

There are a few varieties of the forging processes. Impact forging and press forging are two of the very popular forging procedures. The hammer or load is applied by impact in impact forging. This causes the deformation to take place in an exceedingly small amount of time. Force or pressure is continuously applied to the work piece in press forging. It could be done either by hot or cold forging

Other forging process methods consist of roll forging, swaging, cogging, impression-die forging, open-die forging, press forging, automatic hot forging and upsetting.
